What a Great Time We Have Had

We just finished our Friendship Campfire for the three week and 10 day session.  What a great time we’ve had tonight and all day long as well.  At campfire we honored the campers who have many years of Gwynn Valley summers.  As a tradition at our final evening program we recognize those who are coming for their 4th and 5th year with a blanket for the 4th year and a wooden plaque for their 5th year.  We have those stand who have gone beyond the 5th year and honor the 8th year with a symbolic compass that always points back to GV as your second home.  Those who have been at camp for 10 years get a stool that provides a step up when we need it and possibly a different view of the world as we rise above and seek higher ground. We had two Young Leaders who received their stool this year.  That’s a long time; it’s such a joy to watch these children grow into such fine young people.  Several staff members performed a wonderful song written years ago by their staff members that still stands true today.  We watched a short video and saw photos from the session which is always a highlight.  Many thanks to our video and photo staff for capturing the essence of camp.   Debbie finished off the evening playing, “May the road rise to meet you”…..and the staff sang to the campers.

Looking back to an earlier part of our day the Main Camp Kayakers had a grand time on the French Broad.  The campers did a great job and earned their river fins today.  Other trips out today included hikers to Pisgah National Forest and the climbers went to the Rock at camp.  Bikers rode every trail in camp and more.  Morning trips and adventure time provided a good feeling of accomplishment for those campers.  There were some tired puppies when these trips returned.

This morning in Main Camp at home we held our last signups for the session and there was a lot to do.  At the farm campers fed the calves, saw the new piglets that were born this week, dug potatoes and picked corn.  Many activities met one last time to celebrate the skills we learned over the past many days.. Tonight at dinner we had our usual meal of pizza and of course salad, grapes salad and fresh corn.  Brownies also came after pizza and the energy level was high.  There’s nothing better than good food and good friends to makes spirits soar.

Tomorrow when you arrive your children will be waiting for you in the cabins.  You are free to gather them and walk around camp.  Our days are full here at camp and I’m sure you will learn about the experiences over the days ahead.  Thank you for sharing your children with us this past 10 days and 3 weeks.  We’ve had a wonderful session and hope to see all of these children back again next summer.  Their presence fills our hearts!
