So Much to Smile About
Bittersweet feelings fill the air as our wonderful D Session and Starter Camp comes to a close. On the final evening of these unforgettable days, our Main Campers gathered in the Lodge to celebrate the memories they’ve made together. We watched a heartfelt recap video and slideshow, sang the beloved camp favorite “Linger,” and closed with the emotional farewell song, “People, Now Our Meeting Is Over.”
Amidst this evening of reflection on such a memorable session, the highlights of the past few days naturally come to mind. From Performing Arts Campfire to International Day and Tajar Ball, there truly is no shortage of stories to tell and memories to cherish.
This past International Day celebrated our staff from Australia, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. We learned the classic Australian “Nutbush” dance, learned the New Zealand pepeha and haka traditions, and ate a remarkable Costa Rican dinner featuring Arroz con Pollo, Firjoles Molidos, and Yucca. We ended the evening by sharing
stories and playing a lively game of “Pūkana,” gathering in one large circle on the Green complete with Main Campers, Older Programs, and staff. As the sun began to set, it was a beautiful moment showcasing the unity of our community filled with campers, both new and old, joining in celebration.
Such magic was also present in The Lodge on the night of our Performing Arts Campfire, where the talents of our Music, Set Design, and Musical discoveries were showcased. We witnessed the performance of various instruments and a theatrical musical about our very own animals here at Gwynn Valley, with the storyline crafted by the campers themselves.
Since their “Midsummer” picnic, our Mountainsiders have been gearing up and training for their upcoming Adventures. They also came together for the beloved “Dutch Auction,” a Mountainside tradition filled with hilarious skits and plenty of fun.
Speaking of Adventures, Riverside has just returned again from their second excursion in Whitewater Paddling. They ventured through the Nantahala River during the days and camped out through the nights. Back at camp, our Young Leaders are continuing to lead by example in serving as role models across activities and meals.
Yesterday was especially exciting, as we celebrated the birthday of our camp mascot, the Tajar, with an outdoor picnic, creative costumes, games, a hayride, a water slide, and, of course, dancing. We were blessed with beautiful weather and an abundance of joy all around.
As D Session Closing Day arrives and we reflect on the countless memories we’ve made together, the timeless quote from none other than Winnie the Pooh comes to mind:
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
