1935
Mary Gwynn worked for the YWCA, directing Camp Chelan before opening her own program. She continued to work for the YWCA in the winters and ran her camp during the summer seasons. Gay Valley Camp for Boys and Girls was founded in 1935 by Mary Gwynn and was located at the site of Eagle’s Nest Camp for the first summer before moving to Camp Transylvania which is now the Brevard Music Center.
1938
A 1938 brochure states, “A Co-Educational Project in Camping and Character Building – An opportunity to live simply in the out-of-doors; to drink deep of the beauty of the mountains; to develop new skills and appreciations and creative tastes; to learn to work and play and live happily together in a world where they have the chance to make their own choices with children their own age level under wise adult guidance.” These same educational goals and values continue today at Gwynn Valley Camp.
