Courage Beyond Camp

E Session radiates such presence, excitement, and fresh energy that it’s difficult to imagine its conclusion just around the corner. Whether it’s a camper’s first year or fifth, it has been a joy to watch them embrace new experiences and challenge themselves throughout the session. From the traverse line on the Lake to blacksmithing in the Forge, camp offers countless opportunities to step outside of comfort zones and discover new passions.

I’ve had the chance to ask several campers what skills they’ve gained during their time at camp, and one response has stood out again and again: they’ve learned how to conquer their fears because camp provides a safe place to do so. One camper who was afraid of heights signed up for Climbing – our 50-foot climbing tower, that is – while another who dreaded public speaking chose Performing Arts. Their willingness to face these challenges with confidence is a powerful testament to the simultaneously nurturing and adventurous spirit that defines Gwynn Valley. These moments of courage and growth are among the many reasons camp continues to leave such a lasting impact on our campers.

One of my favorite things is seeing campers try something new at camp and then carry those experiences home with them. Some learn to belay and later become certified at their local climbing gym. Others make friendship bracelets for friends at school or join the theater club after performing in the camp musical. Our older  campers may discover a passion for paddling, backcountry camping, or outdoor education that continues to shape their interests long after the summer ends. The options for passions that could be ignited in this unique space are limitless. 

Another common anecdote campers share is how they have learned to make new friends in unfamiliar environments. Time and again, they describe arriving at camp knowing no one, only to leave with friendships that span cabins, activities, and state lines. While campers undoubtedly become close with their cabin groups, they also build meaningful connections through their activities, afternoon sign-ups, adventures, and shared meal tables, all of which bring together campers of different ages, backgrounds, and interests.

I was reminded of this today as our Mountainsiders and Riversiders returned from their off-camp adventures and rejoined with our Main Campers on their final day of Discoveries. It was a joy to watch campers excitedly reconnect, swap stories from their different adventures, and celebrate one another’s experiences across camp. 

The beauty of Gwynn Valley is that even as the session winds down, the fears faced, new interests discovered, and friendships formed last far beyond Closing Day.
