4th of July

,

Wow –  the fun never stops here.  Yesterday was an unbelievable day as we celebrated the 4th at camp.  It was such a full day! Although warm that afternoon, everyone enjoyed the nice weather and sunny skies.  There was a chance of some storms and rain but fortunately, the storms stayed to the north of us and we only had some rain around right at dinner time on our “Great American Day”.

We started off with a wake up by Paul Revere riding through camp telling us the British were coming who were following on horseback.  At eight o’clock, our downtown GV was filled with famous patriotic tunes until our own Statue of Liberty welcomed all the immigrants from our many international destinations here at GV.  Miss Liberty stood on our lake shore as most of our international staff made their way past her raised torch to our fair land.  After they all came ashore Miss Liberty read from her own inscription, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” It was a fitting occasion as we at camp all know the importance of acceptance, which is one of our core values.

From there it was on to breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, homemade whole wheat biscuits and fresh strawberries and blueberries. After we finished, we all went out on the Green for our traditional “4th” dance party.  It was a good way to get the blood flowing and celebrate some great American tunes.  From there it was on to our morning B day Discovery activities.  Right before lunch, we had the battle of the bands with Taylor Swift as the final artist. Lunch was chicken tenders, cowboy fries, salad, pickles, and fruit. After lunch there was singing in the Lodge and sign-ups as usual, many of which had American themes.

After more afternoon activities, we came together for a large camp wide picnic with delicious barbecue and apple pie for dessert! We had to eat in the dining room due to last minute rain. Evening program, known as campfire, was lots of fun as we welcomed some celebrities and famous people. We had Uncle Sam, Dolly Parton, Mr. Beast, Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus, the Little Mermaid, Babe Ruth, Bill Nye the Science Guy and many others. The sun came out for the parade of stars and the clouds parted. We moved to the lodge after the parade where some counselors had a pie eating contest where campers cheered them on followed by a wonderful performance put on by quite a few campers enacting the landing on the moon.  After a full day of entertainment it was off to the cabin to brush teeth, gather their cabin tarps, and flashlights before heading back to the lake for FIREWORKS!!  What a great show it was. As you can imagine we were all pretty tuckered out at the end of the day.  I slept like a rock and know the campers did too.

I can’t wait to see what today will bring.
