One of my favorite things about summer at Gwynn Valley is the imagination and spirit campers bring on Opening Day. From spontaneous cabin sing-alongs on the Pavilion to paddling around the Lake, campers have a way of transforming ordinary moments into something unforgettable. I love hearing about the adventures during meals—laughing together over stories from the day while sharing a hearty plate of shepherd’s pie, warm rolls fresh from the oven, and vegetables grown right here on the Farm. These meals become a pause in the day, a chance to reflect, reconnect, and build friendships that seem to grow as quickly as the summer crops.
As each session comes to a close, one of the most exciting traditions unfolds. Our talented Photography team shares a session video that captures the heart of camp life—moments of joy, curiosity, and growth woven together. Sitting together in the Lodge, campers watch themselves learning to weave on a loom, carefully climbing to the top of the climbing wall, or sprinting down the watermat before plunging into the Lake with their cabinmates. You can see it all: the quiet concentration at the loom, the courage it takes to climb higher than before, and the pride that shines through when a camper holds up a finished blacksmithing project. These small moments tell a much bigger story of confidence, connection, and discovery.
On chilly winter afternoons, I sometimes revisit these session videos, letting them transport me back to sun-warmed days and laughter echoing across camp. They’re a reminder that summer is never too far away.
Winter at camp has a beauty all its own, though it feels different without the buzz of summer. The fields are quiet, the days are shorter, and the sun dips low over the Farm instead of setting behind the Blue Ridge Mountains. Of course, our thoughts are already drifting toward the months ahead. With Opening Day drawing closer, we’re eagerly anticipating the laughter, warmth, and magic of welcoming campers back for another wonderful summer at Gwynn Valley Camp. We can’t wait to see familiar faces and meet new ones—summer will be here before we know it!
